Glaucoma Surgeries
ALT (Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty) Laser
This procedure creates tiny openings in the trabecular meshwork to reopen the blocked drainage channel to reduce the intraocular pressure.
About the laser treatment
- Procedure developed in the late 1970's
- Used for Open Angle Glaucoma
- Alternative solution to controlling eye pressure when eye drops are not effective or not tolerated well.
- Treatment consists of making 80-100 tiny openings
- High success rate but might need to be repeated
- Patients experience little discomfort.
- Procedure is performed by Dr. Newman in the office.
PI (Peripheral Iridotomy) Laser
Creates a tiny hole in the iris (colored part of eye) using a laser. This allows the fluid to flow more freely and prevent the sudden buildup of eye pressure.
About the Laser treatment
- Used for Closed-Angle Glaucoma and Narrow Angle Glaucoma
- Preventative method for Acute Closed-Angle Glaucoma attack. During such an attack, the eye pressure suddenly elevates causing extreme pain, nausea and blurry vision.
- Often use of eye medication (drops) can be reduced or, in some cases, discontinued.
- Patients experience little discomfort.
- Procedure is performed by Dr. Newman in the office.
Ahmed Valve, Shunts, & Stents
Devices that are implanted in the eye to help better control intraocular eye pressures. These procedures are performed by Dr. Newman at Rockdale Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Department.
