Corneal Transplant—Known as PK (Penetrating Keratoplasty)

About PK

  • Performed to treat corneal conditions such as keratoconus, injuries, swelling and scarring
  • Donor cornea is supplied by the local eye bank
  • Dr. Newman removes the damaged central portion (the button) of the cornea and replaces it with a donor cornea  
  • Procedure is performed by Dr. Newman at Rockdale Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Department.

 

Partial Corneal Transplant—Known as DSEK (Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty)

About DSEK

  • Unlike PK, DSEK replaces the endothelium, the bottom layer of the cornea
  • Faster recovery time than PK
  • Fewer sutures (stitches) required for this procedure
  • Primarily used to treat Fuchs' Corneal Dystrophy
  • Less chance of rejection when compared to PK
  • Procedure is performed by Dr. Newman at Rockdale Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Department
