Corneal Transplant—Known as PK (Penetrating Keratoplasty)
About PK
- Performed to treat corneal conditions such as keratoconus, injuries, swelling and scarring
- Donor cornea is supplied by the local eye bank
- Dr. Newman removes the damaged central portion (the button) of the cornea and replaces it with a donor cornea
- Procedure is performed by Dr. Newman at Rockdale Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Department.
Partial Corneal Transplant—Known as DSEK (Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty)
About DSEK
- Unlike PK, DSEK replaces the endothelium, the bottom layer of the cornea
- Faster recovery time than PK
- Fewer sutures (stitches) required for this procedure
- Primarily used to treat Fuchs' Corneal Dystrophy
- Less chance of rejection when compared to PK
- Procedure is performed by Dr. Newman at Rockdale Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Department
